Interleukins are an important and large family of cytokines in the immune system, mainly secreted by leukocytes, broadly mediating the growth, differentiation, activation, and migration of immune cells. Different interleukins exert diverse and sometimes opposing functions: for example, IL-2 promotes T-cell proliferation, IL-10 exerts anti-inflammatory immunosuppression, and IL-12 induces Th1 responses. The interleukin network plays a core regulatory role in infection, inflammation, autoimmunity, and the tumor microenvironment.
