Plant & Microbial Proteins

Plant and microbial protein targets refer to recombinant-protein collections from non-animal sources—plants, algae, fungi, and bacteria—and functional proteins unique to their source organisms, holding a unique and important position in biopharmaceuticals, agricultural improvement, feed and food nutrition enhancement, industrial enzyme applications, and basic biology-mechanism research. These targets include: plant hormones and signaling-pathway proteins (receptors and signal-transduction proteins for auxin, gibberellin, cytokinin, abscisic acid, ethylene, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid); plant-specific structural and functional proteins (seed storage proteins, lignocellulose-related proteins, lectin glycoproteins, insect- and disease-resistance proteins, plant ferritin and storage proteins); photosynthesis-related proteins (Rubisco large subunit RbcL, small subunit RbcS, photosystem I/II reaction-center proteins D1/D2, cytochrome b6f complex, ferredoxin and ferredoxin reductase, chloroplast ATP synthase); and plant-metabolic-pathway enzymes (photosynthetic carbon-fixation enzymes, sugar-metabolism enzymes, lignin-biosynthesis enzymes, and plant-specific secondary-metabolite synthases). Plant and microbial protein targets hold broad application prospects and market value in agricultural molecular breeding and crop improvement, green-agriculture input development, industrial enzymes and biomaterial manufacturing, and as heterologous-expression platforms for recombinant therapeutic proteins and vaccine antigens.
