Small molecules are haptens, possessing only reactivity but not immunogenicity. Only after conjugation to a carrier (typically a protein or polypeptide) to form a complete antigen do they gain immunogenicity and elicit antibody production upon introduction into an animal.The fundamental principle for designing a hapten into a complete antigen is that, after conjugation to the carrier, the immunizing hapten must maintain and highlight the characteristic structural features of the analyte within the antigen complex, particularly its stereochemistry.
